New Year Decor

New Year Decor

New Years Eve is in 2 DAYS! Wow, that's crazy. Today we are here with some home decor ideas if you are hosting a New Years party this year. Decorating for a party can sometimes be somewhat of a hassle, but it will certainly pay off in the end! Some of the items listed above are a bit pricey but most of them are affordable and can be reused many items. If you really like an item that you see when searching for party decorations but don't want to break the bank, don't give up hope! There are many similar items that can be found at reasonable prices, so just keep searching!

To make things easier...

Pick a theme for your party and then start coordinating decorations and colors. Colors like gold, silver, and black are always classics for New Years parties but don't be afraid to go with a different color scheme if that's what you prefer.

Know what type of party your hosting. This may seem obvious but it is actually extremely important. Will the party be small/big, relaxed/fancy? There are many different options here and the decor will most likely be different depending on what kind of party your hosting.

Prepare in advance. You can start preparing for your party at any time and starting early will definitely help alleviate some stress and pressure. You can have so much more fun decorating if you're not under the clock!

One last thing...

This may not be our last blog post for the year, but either way we just wanted to say THANK YOU! Seeing our blog (est. June 2015) grow over the last 7 months has been amazing. We love blogging and putting content out for others to read. Our goal for next year is to be more consistent with posting. We also hope to continue improving the design of Simply Semisweet and make some improvements in general! We have already gotten so many amazing opportunities and memories from of this blog and we can't wait to see where 2016 takes us!

Christmas Traditions

Monday, December 28, 2015

Hey everyone! We hope you all had fun during the holidays! We have been very busy first completing finals, then going on winter break but getting ready for the Holidays. The holidays are always a chaotic time in our household because there is much to do. Between baking, getting ready for family coming over, buying last minute Christmas presents, and hosting a Christmas party, you can say things got pretty hectic and busy-but VERY exciting! We celebrate Christmas and have many traditions that come along with it. We decided it would be fun to share our traditions and what we do over the holiday season.

Having Family Over
Usually, we have family come over for the holidays. Truthfully, with school and work keeping everyone busy, we rarely get the chance to see our family members. Even still, we spend Christmas with only our Aunt and Uncle since they are the only family members we have that live in America! It always makes for a fun time!

We did many fun things like go to Union Station & Crown Center and we even went to watch Star Wars!

Holiday Baking:
With the holidays comes a long list of desserts and sweets that our family makes every year. In Bulgaria, which is where we are from, food is a big part of the holidays and there are several traditional foods-namely sweets-that must be made. These treats include 4 or more different types of cookies, Baklava, Cake, and more!

Christmas Eve
In Bulgaria, Christmas Eve is traditionally celebrated with a big dinner. Everything on the table has to be vegan and a minimum of 8-9 foods have to be served on the table. Although we usually don't have a bite of every single item on the table (oops!) it is still great to be able to keep the traditional Christmas Eve dinner!

Before we sit down for dinner, we go to a Christmas Eve Candlelight Service. It's so nice to be reminded every year of the reasons that we celebrate Christmas and it is always such an inspirational service. At the end of the service, the candlelight gets passed around and soon afterwards, the entire auditorium is filled with light!

Opening Presents
Christmas morning is quite the time to be alive! Like most people who celebrate Christmas, we open presents! However, our family decided a couple years back that we would put a spin on the traditional way of opening presents. We get to pick up our present, but then we set it down. After that, we get to ask up to 10 "yes or no" questions or we can guess. Some presents are guessed after the third question, but each year there are some real stumpers! This makes opening presents quite a process but also makes it so much fun!

Christmas Party
Every year we have a Christmas Party at our house. We usually invite family friends and have a great time dancing, singing, eating, and talking! Christmas is always a great time to get together with friends and family.

We hope you all had fun during the holidays!

Holly Jolly Hot Chocolate Recipes

Sunday, December 06, 2015

Hello Everyone! With winter starting, you know there's one thing on our minds. Hot Chocolate. Yes, that's right. There's nothing better than making yourself a warm chocolate drink with melting marshmallows and fresh whipped cream.  We make ourselves all kinds of hot chocolate, from the pre-packaged mixes to the start-from-scratch on the stove with good quality dark chocolate kind. So here's a few of our favorite (and insanely delicious) Hot Chocolate recipes!

Classic Homemade Spiced Hot Chocolate

Ingredients:
  • Milk
  • Semisweet Chocolate Chips or any other good quality dark chocolate
  • Vanilla
  • Cinnamon
  • Marshmallows (to add on top if you wish)
  • Homemade or store bought whipped cream
Place the milk and chocolate chips on the stove to melt together. Also add in the vanilla cinnamon. You will have to continuously stir to make sure the chocolate doesn't burn. All the ingredients will slowly combine. You should get a thick, frothy, dark brown liquid goodness. Take it off the stove when everything is well combined and well-mixed throughout. These flavors with the real chocolate will make for a rich and sweet drink that is simply irresistible! Once you pour it into your favorite mug, add marshmallows and your whipped cream. If you want to make homemade whipped cream, just whip up some heavy whipping cream with sugar and vanilla. It turns out very well!

Peppermint Hot Chocolate

Ingredients:

  • Milk
  • Hot chocolate mix (or you can use the recipe above without the spices)
  • Peppermint syrup or extract
  • Crushed up Candy Canes
  • Peppermint Marshmallows
  • Whipped cream
Fill up a mug with milk and put it in the microwave/heat it up until it is hot. Once you take it out, put a few spoons of your hot chocolate mix and some of your peppermint flavoring (syrup or extract) into the milk and stir until everything is well combined. If you use peppermint extract, you will only need a tiny drop of flavoring in your drink. However, we use peppermint syrup and the flavor is not as strong, so you can afford to add a bit more. After that, your drink is ready for some garnish like whipped cream, crushed up candy canes, or even some peppermint marshmallows. This drink is so delicious and perfect for the winter!

Eggnog Hot Chocolate

Ingredients:

  • Milk
  • Hot chocolate mix
  • Eggnog
  • Any other toppings
Make the hot chocolate by heating up milk and stirring in your choice of hot chocolate mix. Then, add in a splash of eggnog. You can add as much or as little as you want. Eggnog is very rich and sweet, and happens to be the perfect combo with some chocolate. At least that's what we think! Then, you can put whatever else in your drink or on top for some extra flare!

These are some of our favorite three hot chocolate recipes. They are super simple to make and require almost no time and very few ingredients. Hot chocolate is a great drink to customize. Try something new with your favorite drink this winter!

Hello December

Tuesday, December 01, 2015

December is finally here! This means the holidays are quickly approaching (YAY!!!). This year, we have created a list of things we love doing during the winter season and thought we'd share with you!

Ice Skating
This one is basically a no-brainer but still just as valid. We LOVE ice skating and when you get a bunch of people together that also enjoy ice skating, it can make for a really fun time! Don't worry if you aren't a pro-not many people are. But that's part of the fun too.

Find Community Outreach Events
The holiday season is full of high spirits, laughs, friends, family, and food for many of us. But isn't it inspiring to know that you are helping others, especially during the festive holiday season?

Find Some Relaxing Reads
This is a big one! Since we don't always have time to read, winter break is the perfect time to just relax and curl up with a good book (or two!). Make yourself some warm tea or hot chocolate and you're all set!

Create a Holiday Playlist
There's no better way to get into the "holiday mood" than listening to some holiday music. It's always nice to have a mix of songs in there. Add some classics and go-to holiday songs, but also look for some new songs that you haven't listened to before. You never know how you could find the perfect holiday song.

Holiday Baking
For the holidays, we bake A LOT. Christmas cookies, cake, gingerbread cookies, you name it! We love baking with our mom in preparation for Christmas. It's a great way to spend time with your family and have some delicious treats for the holidays!

Find a New Hot Chocolate Recipe
We love classic hot chocolate, but it's always nice to jazz things up around the holidays! Add ingredients that you love! We love adding peppermint into our hot chocolate during the winter. Don't be shy. You'll find that many different combo's work in hot chocolate!

Pick Out the Christmas Tree With Your Family
This is one of those things that many people look forward to during the holidays! It's always a nice way to spend time with your family. It's rewarding too! You can find the perfect tree and then go home and decorate it with lights, ornaments and whatever else you traditionally put on your tree!

That's it for today! We have many more holiday posts coming up! Are we the only ones counting the days (literally) until we're on holiday break?
